The 7th Sealions comp was held on Saturday the 13th of June in Forster and we have passed the halfway mark in the spearfishing calendar year.
The conditions we awoke to in Forster on Saturday soon erased any bad feelings from the cramped sleeping conditions that were experienced by one cabin full of punters. There was a slight offshore breeze working and no swell to talk of, the visibility was more than acceptable, the water temperature was balmy compared to the 13 degree Eden water I suffered through the week before and to top it all off the launching facilities were a pleasure to use compared to the ramps on the coast.
8am and six boats spend over the bar, life jackets were on but purely for show because there was not so much as a ripple on the break wall. Most boats turned right and headed straight for Latitude Rock. The general consensus was that the water was quite nice and the was a few fish around in particular big blackfish and bream. Boats then spread out in search of more productive grounds and after a few hours diving everyone sped back over oily smooth conditions in time for the late 2:30pm sign-off.
At weigh-in most people had managed some great eating fish and the comp soon developed into a “Biggest Bream Comp”. Glenn Bath ended up taking the honours with a bream of 1.06kg. He was the only diver to break the 1kg mark for a bream on the day and ended up taking out the whole comp.
All in all it was a top comp with some good eating fish caught and plenty of turtles, sharks and a huge variety of other marine life to check out.
