South West Weekend Away

The 3rd Sealions comp for 2009 was a weekend away to South West Rocks. The weeks leading up to the comp saw many reports of filthy water and speculation that the comp would be undiveable . Still by Friday the 27th of February the were a good number of Sealions setting up camp in the SWR Tourist park on the banks of Mosquito River and several other Sealions scattered over the town.

Friday morning saw a few boats put out through the creek and river to test the waters of SWR. Heading north to Grassy Head the water could not have been dirtier with ZERO meters vis. Green island and Fish Rock were not much better. A few fish were picked up for dinner from Black Rock including a club record Pearl Perch by Craig! An excellent fish! Back at the camp some of the Juniors had cleaned up at the Jail with some cracking Mangrove Jack landed and tales of big Jew and King sighted.

After a fish BBQ the 10pm curfew was carefully avoided and an early night was had by all in preparation for the comp the next morning. A 7am start worked on the Honesty system as different sized boats had to be launched at different locations. Visibility was diveable in most locations and there was no shortage a top quality fish and all but one boat, which headed all the way to Coffs Harbour, made it back for the 2pm sign-off.

The quality of fish produced at weigh-in was exceptional with large Kings, Cobia and Mangrove Jack all landing on the scales. Hayden dominated the comp beating his nearest competitor by over 200 points thanks to a large Mangrove Jack, Flathead and King among other fish. Well Done!

That afternoon people were dodging hordes of mosquitoes  while cleaning fish finishing in time for dinner at the pub and a few cold drinks wrapping up a fantastic weekend as well as one of our most successful comps fish-wise in a long time.

A special thanks to all of the divers families and partners who came away and shared the weekend, especially the families of our Junior spearos without whom the Juniors would not get to dive, your support and time are really appreciated. Thanks again,

Joe
